SOUK EL KUMACH
Along the west side of the Great Mosque runs the Souk El
Kumach, or cloth market, whose architectural symmetry is
clear proof that a souk does not just grow haphazardly from
a collection of shops, but is harmoniously designed as background
for a lifestyle.
Two rows of stone columns divide the souk into three lanes
: the middle one, for pedestrians and traffic, is wider
than the side lanes with their shops.
Two doors guard the access to this market. One, on the Attarine
side, is flanked by columns in the pure Moorish tradition.
