SOUK EL BIRKA
This souk, built by Youssef Dey (1610-1637) is now occupied
by the jewelers' guild. It is wide, with a central dome
and barrel vaults down the sides and looks more like square.
The wooden block on which slaves were sold at auction used
to stand in the middle. Purchasers made their choice and
then sat on benches facing the block and took part in the
bidding.
