SIDI BOUKHRISSAN MAUSOLEUM
12, rue Ben Mahmoud
Near the Rue Sidi Bou Khrissan, whose name commemorates
the Beni-Khourassan dynasty (11th and 12th centuries), lies
this necropolis which was once part of the oldest city cemetery.
This ran along the old ramparts to the south-west of the
Medina. The funeral columns are striking because of the
ornate calligraphy of their epitaphs.
The domed building is in the classic funerary style of the
Maghreb. It holds the tombs of the Beni-Khourassan. The
hemispherical dome is set on a wider cylindrical section,
itself resting on a square base, with four great pillars
supporting it and emphasizing its importance.
