DAR EL BEY
Place du gouvernement
In 1795 the Husseinid monarch built this palace on the
ruins of princely buildings dating from Mouradite times.
The upper floor was extremely luxurious, with the rooms
to the south and east being particularly lavish.
The Andalusian décor shows the continuity of influence
of Spanish artists. It was kept for the most important state
visitors from France, Germany, Britain and the Ottoman Empire.
Following the establishment of the French protectorate (1882-1883)
it had no further use as a palace and was taken over by
the administration services when they moved from Bardo.
Since independence the Dar El Bey has become the Prime Minister's
Office.
