Places to visit from sousse

From Sousse, visitors are simply spoilt for choice when it comes to discovering other major towns and sites in Tunisia. A day is enough to discover the site of Carthage, the Moorish village of Sidi Bou Said and the capital, Tunis, with its medina, its souks with thousands of shopping opportunities and its Bardo Museum, renowned for its collection of Roman mosaics. Further South, two-day outings will bring you either to
Sfax, the Kerkennah Isles and the coastal oases of Gabes, Chenini and El Hamma or, by striking inland, to the Saharan oases of Gafsa, Tozeur, Nefta, Chott el Jerid and the mountain oases of Tamerza, Chibika and Mides. You can make two more important excursions from Sousse, to the Holy City of Kairouan, to admire one of the most prestigious sites of Islam
and the home of Tunisia's carpet industry. Monastir, international cinematographic centre where famous films and TV series, such as Jesus of Nazareth and Anno Domini, have been made. And last but not least, Mahdia, a fishing port and holiday resort which is also a prestigious historical site and perfect for the most delightful strolls. Less than an hour away from Sousse by car, El Djem, a village that is famous for its amphitheatre built by the Emperor Gordian about 230 AD, is a must for all archaeology buffs who will also be attracted by its museum rich in Roman mosaics. To the North, a trip to the two resorts of Cap bon is strongly recommended : at Hammamet, visitors can admire the gardens of the lovely villas, the orange groves, the Spanish and the beautiful fine sandy beaches. At Nabeul you can enjoy craftsmanship which is greatly prized throughout the world, the pottery and ceramics workshops, the embroidery and lace, and the enchanting vitality of its souks.
