Thapsus :
Present-day Ras Dimass. The name of this
city whose history goes back to the Punic time and which was
attacked by Agathocle in 310, is associated with Caesar's
victory over the Pompeiians and the armies of Juba I in 46
B.C. during the Bellum Africanum. The archaeological vestiges
related to this past are numerous and are increasing steadily.
Today, the imposing traces of a recently exhumed amphitheatre
may be mentioned together with the multiple funeral samples
coming from a large necropolis scattered over 2 km or more,
the immersed vestiges of the port's infrastructure, and the
many remains of water equipments and the potters' kilns.
