Nabeul / Neapolis
A city and site on the southern coastline of
the Cap Bon, situated at about 60 kilometres south-east of
Carthage. Literally, meaning new city - in Greek - this town
has deep pre-Roman roots. Taking part in the Romano-Carthaginian
conflict, it sided with Carthage against Rome, it underwent
the backlash of the Roman victory. But, soon after the conquest,
Neapolis became Romanised, receiving the status of colony.
Though prosperous up to the early Middle Ages, Neapolis gradually
ran to seed. In the 12 th century, the Arab geographer Al-Idrissi
depicted it as a land of ruins.
Still under study, the vestiges of this ancient city start
gathering real importance. See for example the remarkable
infrastructure related to the preservation of fish and the
making of garum; other monuments among which rich homes with
sumptuous mosaic can also be visited...
