Althiburos is situated on the borderline between the Carthaginian and Numidian worlds. That is the reason why it benefited from both civilisations. But since the Roman era, it improved its Libyco-Punic substratum with Roman cultural input, so that it obtained the status of free town under Hadrian. Drawing profit from its position on the route Carthage-Thevest, this city stood fast through the Byzantine period. However, like many other cities, it ended by running to seed and nobody knows when exactly it was forsaken !
