Today situated at 12 km south-west of Sfax, Thaenae
was the city furthest south in Afrikya, the first Roman province
in Africa. Romanised at an early time, Thaenae became a colony
with the reign of Hadrian. In accordance with its rank, it
was endowed with sumptuous monuments, alas unpreserved; however,
one can still recognise the remains of the thermes, villas,
a Palaeo-Christian basilica, a necropolis, salting cisterns...
