THE HOSPITABLE DESERT
| In Douz,
the touristic zone looking on to the sandy desert. Numerous
are the agencies that put down excursions in the desert,
which found a new outlet by the local camel drivers savoir-faire.
thanks to them, one can taste the nomadic life, by oneself
or collectively (in a groupe) riding a real sadle camel. |

Nefzoua is
a presaharan region dominated by the ancient sahara nomads
it has got a landscape of villages covered by a fine mantle
of white sand, silent dunes and a clump of palmtrees.
In the south begins the great oriental erg.
Douz is the point of departure of the majority of the
greatest raids in the middle of the desert, and of the
excursions towards ksar ghilane, the haven of peace in
the middle of the desert, where one can camp in a bedowin
tent. |

Chott El Jerid , "
the salt desert" which is an immense salty lake almostthotally
dried out, offering a wide ranging sterility as far as the eye
can see .the dazzling whiteness of the salt cristals represents
a source of dreams. In november, the "Chott" is the
framework within which sport events such as "chott
strides" (marathon semi-marathon) are organized.

Tozeur and
Nefta , these are the great southern
medinas, the oasis with thousands of palm trees, where
one can breathe the delicious undergrowth freshness. the
city of poets "tozeur" is remarkable by its
architecture of bare briks forming geometrical designs.
Nefta which is the city of the 20 mosques and the 100
marabouts, is famous by its tradition of sufism.
specialities : dates "deglet nour" ("light
fingers") that are gathered in november, palm trees
leaves handicraft, carpets... etc |
the "Ksour" region offers an imposing
and austere landscape of cliffs and cuestas. there (ksour)
we find the latest berber villages of tunisia : chenini, guermessa,
douiret, the region's curiosity the ksour (the plural of ksar
: palace) are ancient lofts which are fortified and made up
of oblong cells : "les ghorfas". there's a rustic
hotel as well in an ancient "ksar", "ksar haddada
(in ghomrassen)".
the oasis of mountains : chebika, tameghza, mides,
are implanted into a startling decor of yellowish ochre moutains
and of canyons. we find there also waterfalls, palmgroves
and berber villages.
