TRAVELLING AROUND FROM CAP
BON
Due
to their position on the map, HAMMAMET and NABEUL are ideal
starting points for the most beautiful excursions. Tunis and
its outlying region, KAIROUAN and SOUSSE, are just an hour
away by car. One day is all it takes to discover CARTHAGE
and the village of SIDI BOU SAID, the most beautiful and most
typical of Moorish villages in the Mediterranean; the Bardo
museum which boasts the biggest collection of mosaics; the
Medina at Tunis and the souks with their endless opportunities
for shopping. The holy city of Kairouan offers the majesty
of its Great Mosque, the most important in Muslim Africa,
its countless mausoleums and its souks where you can admire
the Kairouan carpets which made the town famous. Finally Sousse,
the sister resort of Hammamet and Nabeul with its ramparts,
Ribat, the museum and an original Medina which provides a
magnificent view over the town and the port. Archaeological
trips are also recommended: EL JEM, with its huge coliseum,
its mosaic museum and its Roman villas, THUBURBO MAJUS, and
DOUGGA which is especially recommended as the best-preserved
Roman site in Tunisia further afield, to the south, a two-day
trip will take you to SFAX, the KERKENNAH, ISLANDS and the
maritime oases of GABES , CHENINI and el HAMMA, or, heading
inland, to the Saharan oases of GAFSA
TOZEUR, NEFTA, CHOTT EL JERID and the mountain oases (TAMERZA
CHEBIKA and MIDES).
