A small city in
ruins on a rocky peak dominating the valley with abandoned
caves (or amost) excavated from the side of the mountain,
small pieces of land worked in the Oued and some friendly,
dignified but worried men
This type of fortified
village with its citadel-granery (the Kalaa) located in
the "independent Jebel" after the invasions
by Beni Hillal's Arab tribe at mid-eleventh century allowed
the Berbers to resist "the men from the planes"
(arab tribes) accepting their protection at times because
of |
economic interests and lively hood.Today such
precautions are no longer justified and living in safety the
Jebel man (from the mountain) aspires to something more than
living in the caves even if they present the climatic advantages
that a modern house does not offer unless it has costly heating
and cooling equipments.
