It is not just a cultural event among others; it is a tradition that establishes itself El jem international festival of classical music started in 1985. it is a cultural event of international dimensions which attracts to thysdrus, the thousand year old ancient El jem and its prestigious roman amphitheatre, many music lovers.
With such a festival the dream is fulfilled. The amphitheatre is revived but it lives its own era : the sounds of music, either caressing or biting, fertile or arid, have replaced wild animals roarings and screams of gladiators or the torture victims. Those who had the opportunity of visiting El jem during the festival were seduced by the synthesis, how rich it is, with the splendour of the monument and the beauty of the music, in which it arrays itself one month per year.
Therfore, the festival is not only the fulfilment of a dream but also the expression of and ambition : that of being a symbol of a real international cooperation : the ambition of contributing by such means to the development of El jem and of cultural tourism in tunisia
