Roman villas
Archaeological excavations have
brought to light some thirty Roman villas, all of which
testify to the wealth of the local bourgeoisie. The actual
dwellings paved with colourful mosaics, usually with the
mythological motif, were built around an inner courtyard
or garden surrounded by a colonnaded gallery [peristyle].
Certain of these mosaics have been transferred to the El
Jem Museum, others remain on site.
